THE TYPICAL BENGALI MEAL

A typical Bengali (non-vegetarian) meal is a multi course meal similar to French cuisine, and will start with vegetable dishes (bitter vegetables followed by others) with rice, followed by daal (lentil soup) also eaten with rice, then followed by smaller fish dishes which then progresses to larger fish courses, then poultry, and meat dishes followed by sweets.

Traditionally lunch is the main meal followed by early evening tea and snacks (similar to high tea).  Dinners are usually lighter meals served late in the evening.  While rice is the traditional staple, breads such as rooti (wheat tortilla’s), luchi’s (deep fried bread) or parata’s (pan fried bread) are often served for both breakfast and dinner.
